Science Partner at OpenAir

Whether begun in “2009 or 1996,” the onetime solo project of Tyler Despres, Science Partner, has grown to include “poached” musicians and drinking buddies alike. With roots in Dualistics, Achille Lauro, The Swayback, and Kitty Crimes, the music family tree of this six member ensemble extends from Chimney Choir and John Common, to Dragondeer and Harpoontang.

In addition to discussing its origin story with OpenAir host Alisha Sweeney, Denver band Science Partner performs three songs from its most recent album, Rocky Mountain News. The band follows “Animal,” with a back to back recital of “Young Patriots” and “Bee Is a Bee” before explaining the album’s namesake as a promotion of regional matters and local music in particular. Concurently, Science Partner expresses particular appreciation for the continual support and resources provided by Denver based Hot Congress Records in releasing the album.

To conclude, Science Partner looks toward a future national tour and yet another new album. As a sample of things to come, the band performs the previously unreleased track, “Western Bells,” exclusively for this CPR Performance Studio Session

Aviation Cocktail returns to the SIE Film Center

Set in the 1950s, and an official Selection of the 35th Starz Denver Film Festival, Aviation Cocktail is loosely based on Higgins’ family history in aviation, and centers around three war vets dealing with rural life after the war.

The film has only been screened in Denver a few times but will open for a full week run at the SIE Film Center on April 26th. Tickets can be purchased on the Film Center's website. Higgens and select cast will be present after the 7:15pm show on Saturday, April 27th!

Alisha Sweeney sat down with Colorado native and writer/producer/director David Higgins to talk about his film The Aviation Cocktail on the eve of its Denver premiere last October. He brought along Wilson Helmericks to discuss composing the music.

The Congress releases new covers EP nationally

April 16 marks the national release of a new EP by Colorado's own The Congress. "The Loft Tapes" includes seven covers of original songs by Marvin Gaye, Van Morrison, James Taylor, The Impressions and more.

The effort stems from live jam sessions during which members of The Congress would perform some of their favorite soul songs with other local musicians. After guitarist Scott Lane purchased a reel-to-reel tape recorder, the band decided to put it to use. The result: The Congress putting their own unique spin on some classic cuts. The album is available digitally and on vinyl.

Lane stopped by OpenAir recently to chat about the new album with Corey during Mile High Noon. Listen to the interview HERE

The guys will serve as guest clerks at Bart's Music Shack in Boulder for Record Store Day. The Congress also performs live in the Mile High City on May 25 for Denver Day of Rock.
